Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 takes $1bn in sales
Video game Modern Warfare 2 has become one of only a handful of entertainment franchises to take more than $1bn in revenue, its publishers say. It went on sale in November and made an estimated $550m in its first five days. The sales put it alongside other $1bn titles such as Guitar Hero III and World of Warcraft, also owned by publisher Activision. It also puts it alongside other entertainment franchises such as the recent 3D science fiction smash Avatar. The film's takings as of 04 January make it the fourth-biggest film ever made. Ahead of it are Titanic $1.8bn, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King $1.12bn and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest $1.07bn. However, direct comparisons between films and video games are difficult as games typically retail for between three and five times the cost of a cinema ticket.
The first-person-shooter game is the sixth instalment in the Call of Duty series.

Haiti earthquake: devastation emerges
The extent of the devastation from a huge quake in Haiti is slowly emerging, with a number of UN peacekeepers among thousands of people feared dead. UN chief Ban Ki-moon said the head of the UN mission in Haiti and his deputy were among more than 100 staff missing.
The 7.0-magnitude quake, Haiti's worst in two centuries, struck south of the capital, Port-au-Prince, on Tuesday. The Red Cross says up to 3m people have been affected. Port-au-Prince's Roman Catholic archbishop is reported killed.
A priest at the Saint Jacques Missionary Centre in western France told Associated Press news agency Monsignor Joseph Serge Miot had been found dead in his office by fellow missionaries.

Google may pull out of China after cyber attack
Internet giant Google has said it may end its operations in China following a "sophisticated and targeted" cyber attack originating from the country. The company did not accuse the Chinese government directly, but said it was no longer willing to censor its Chinese search engine google.cn. This could result in closing the site, and its Chinese offices, Google said.
The top executive of its Chinese rival Baidu called the move "hypocritical" and financially motivated. Google said the e-mail accounts of Chinese human rights activists were the primary target of the attack, which occurred in December. The search engine has now said it will hold talks with the government in the coming weeks to look at operating an unfiltered search engine within the law in the country, though no changes to filtering had yet been made.
